Why Flight Prices Change by the Minute and What You Can Actually Do About It
I am currently taking a course on air travel and pricing and I have to say the information being shared has been eye opening. I wanted to pass along what I am learning because I think it genuinely helps you make smarter decisions when planning your next trip.
So here is the truth about flight pricing right now.
Flights are no longer changing once or twice a day the way they used to. Because of AI the pricing is now shifting constantly, literally minute to minute. Two people can search the exact same flight at the same time and see completely different prices simply because they searched a few minutes apart. It sounds frustrating and honestly it is, but understanding it helps.
Let me start with the myths. Because there are a lot of them out there and I want to put them to rest once and for all.
Booking last minute will save you money. Not true. Airlines know exactly how to price for urgency and they use it.
Booking on a Tuesday saves you money. This used to have some truth to it years ago. Today it is completely irrelevant.
Clearing your cookies or going incognito will drop the price. This one gets shared all the time. It is not accurate. Two people seeing different prices on the same flight has nothing to do with cookies. It has everything to do with market demand and the moment they searched.
If the flight is half empty the cost will be less. Actually the opposite can be true. Airlines adjust pricing based on what they predict will happen, not just what is happening right now.
Flight prices are driven by a revenue management algorithm that factors in fuel costs, how full the plane is, historical demand for that route and what the airline projects is going to happen. It is complex by design. We are honestly not meant to fully understand it and nobody does.
Here is the good news though. Over the last two years flight pricing has actually leveled out quite a bit. We are not seeing the dramatic spikes we once were. Routes like Punta Cana for example have been remarkably consistent year over year. So while flights are not cheap by any means we are in a more predictable place than we have been in a long time.
And that old tip about booking on a Tuesday to save money? That is no longer valid. AI has made day of week booking strategies mostly irrelevant.
What actually saves you money today is flexibility.
If you can fly mid week, think Wednesday or Thursday instead of Friday, you will almost always find better pricing. Even shifting your departure by a day or two can make a real difference. The more flexible you are with your schedule the more options you have to work with.
I will continue sharing what I learn as I move through this course because I believe an informed traveler is a happier traveler. And when you are ready to start planning your next trip I am always here to help you navigate all of it.
